TotalEnergies discovers Acacia-5 oil field in Angola and takes 40% stakes in two new exploration blocks
TotalEnergies has announced a new oil discovery offshore Angola and secured operated interests in two additional exploration blocks, strengthening its position in the country’s Lower Congo Basin.
The Acacia-5 discovery on Block 17 is expected to add about 6,000 barrels of oil per day to the block’s production.
TotalEnergies plans to fast-track development by using available capacity on the Pazflor FPSO, with first oil targeted within three months of the discovery made in June 2026.
TotalEnergies holds a 38% operated interest in Block 17, alongside Equinor, ExxonMobil, Azule Energy and Sonangol E&P.
The company has also signed agreements with Angola’s petroleum regulator, ANPG, to acquire a 40% operated interest in Blocks 17/25 and 32/21 in the Lower Congo Basin.
ExxonMobil will hold 40% in the two blocks, while Sonangol E&P will retain the remaining 20%.
The blocks are located close to TotalEnergies’ existing operations and have extensive 3D seismic coverage, providing opportunities to explore additional geological targets and potentially connect future discoveries to existing infrastructure.
TotalEnergies operates several production hubs in Blocks 17 and 32, with six FPSOs currently producing, creating opportunities for lower-cost tie-back developments if commercially viable discoveries are made.
US$10 billion investment planned
The expansion comes as TotalEnergies and its partners plan to invest about US$10 billion in Angola over the next five years.
The investment includes the US$6 billion Kaminho deepwater project, which is expected to begin production in 2028, alongside further exploration and development activity.
Acacia-5 represents TotalEnergies’ second exploration success in Angola in 2026, following a discovery on Block 0 earlier in the year.
The latest discoveries and new acreage are expected to support TotalEnergies’ efforts to sustain production in Angola while unlocking additional resources from the country’s mature offshore basins.
