Botswana Moves to Take Full Control of De Beers

Botswana to Acquire Anglo American’s Entire 85% Stake in De Beers, Plans to Share Ownership with Partners

President Duma Boko has announced that Botswana intends to purchase Anglo American’s entire 85% shareholding in De Beers Group, a move he says will position the country as a global leader in the diamond industry.

Addressing Parliament this afternoon, President Boko explained that Botswana has developed a strong business case for taking full ownership of De Beers.

“We will acquire all the shares of De Beers currently held by Anglo American. After securing the full stake, we will then allocate portions to our partners, including Angola and others with whom we are in ongoing discussions,” he said.

He stressed that the proposed ownership model is sound and ensures Botswana’s interests are fully protected.

Anglo American, which currently owns 85% of De Beers, is divesting from the diamond sector as it shifts its strategic focus toward critical minerals, primarily copper.
