Botswana Diamonds Expands Exploration Portfolio with AI and Critical Minerals Strategy

Botswana Diamonds Leverages AI to Diversify Into Critical Minerals While Advancing High-Value Diamond Projects

Despite a challenging year for the global diamond industry, AIM-listed Botswana Diamonds reports significant progress in its strategic expansion efforts. Reflecting on the financial year ending June 30, 2025, and the first half of its 2026 financial year, the company has strengthened its asset base across diamond and critical mineral exploration and adopted advanced technologies to enhance its projects in South Africa and Botswana.

These include Thorny River and Marsfontein in South Africa, and KX36, Sekaka, and Maibwe in Botswana.

Chairperson John Teeling commented, “We enter the next phase of our development with renewed confidence, a broader portfolio, and a clear roadmap for value creation.”

Industry Context

Globally, diamond demand has remained subdued, with soft sales in China and weaker jewellery purchases in the U.S. due to inflation and economic caution. India’s diamond polishing sector also slowed amid high inventories and lower U.S. demand.

Meanwhile, lab-grown diamonds have increased competition, particularly in lower-to-mid-value segments. Botswana Diamonds, however, focuses on high-value natural diamonds, which continue to command strong consumer preference and pricing stability.

Teeling noted that while manufacturing activity has picked up as inventories normalize, overall global demand remains uneven. Long-term supply fundamentals remain favorable, as many small-scale operations are uneconomic and major producers near peak output, with few new large-scale kimberlite mines in development.

These trends support the company’s strategy of prioritizing value over volume and investing in high-potential assets in stable jurisdictions.

Innovating With AI

A major initiative this year was Botswana Diamonds’ collaboration with Planetary AI, employing advanced semantic AI to analyze decades of mining data. This effort identified seven previously unrecognized kimberlite targets and 11 high-quality critical metal targets, including copper, nickel, zinc, silver, gold, and platinum group metals (PGM).

The project integrated over 375,000 km of airborne geophysics surveys, 228,000 soil samples, and 32,000 drill logs, marking one of Botswana’s most advanced applications of AI in mineral exploration.

Teeling stated, “The initiative has opened new frontiers, accelerated our targeting pipeline, and de-risked the early stages of exploration.”

Diversification Into Critical Minerals

Following the AI program, Botswana Diamonds diversified into critical minerals for the first time in 20 years, submitting eight prospecting licence applications covering 6,550 km².

The licences target copper, nickel, PGM, lead, zinc, silver, and gold. Several identified mineralized corridors resemble known prospective areas in neighboring countries, offering first-mover advantages and low-cost entry points.

Teeling emphasized, “This evolution does not abandon our diamond roots but leverages them. Botswana remains underexplored for many commodities despite its exceptional mining code, political stability, and rich geological database. Our experience, operational expertise, and proprietary knowledge position us to capitalize on these opportunities.”

Botswana Diamonds’ diversification is grounded in rigorous data analysis and AI-driven insights, ensuring that expansion into critical minerals complements its ongoing diamond exploration.

The strategy also aligns with government objectives, supporting sustainable resource development and Botswana’s long-term economic growth.
