Angola Boosts Clean Energy with Bailundo Solar Plant Inauguration and New Electrification Projects in Huambo

Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, arrived in Huambo Province on Wednesday to inaugurate the Bailundo photovoltaic plant, oversee the electrification of Chicala Choloanga, and witness the signing of consignment documents for new rural electrification projects across several municipalities.

According to a statement from the provincial government, Minister Borges was welcomed at Albano Machado Airport by Governor Pereira Alfredo, who emphasized the importance of these projects in improving access to reliable energy for local communities.

The day’s program began in Ucuma Municipality, where the minister led the signing ceremony for electrification projects covering Chinjenje, Ucuma, Longonjo, Alto Hama, Londuimbale, and the Chipipa sector.

Later, the delegation traveled to Bailundo, where Borges inaugurated a 7.8 MW solar power plant equipped with over 15,000 solar panels, marking another step in Angola’s push to expand renewable energy capacity.

In Chicala Choloanga, the minister also inaugurated a 37-kilometer power distribution network fitted with five overhead transformer stations, with capacities ranging between 160 kVA and 250 kVA, further extending electricity access to rural households.

Beyond the inaugurations, Borges’ visit also includes chairing the 14th Consultative Council for the Energy and Water Sector, to be held on September 4–5 at CEFOJOR in Huambo, under the theme: “Half a Century Guaranteeing Life, Energy, and Hope.”
