Zambia Welcomes Major Solar Investment from China’s LONGi Green Energy

The Zambian Government has welcomed a major renewable energy investment from Chinese solar technology giant LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., which plans to develop a 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Zambia.

Scheduled to become operational by December 2025, the project marks the first phase of a broader plan to scale up to 200MW—offering a substantial boost to Zambia’s renewable energy sector.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by LONGi executives to the Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, MP, in Lusaka, where the company presented its investment proposal.

Minister Chikote expressed strong support for the initiative, calling it a strategic contribution to Zambia’s clean energy targets and the national agenda to add 1,000MW to the power grid.

“We are committed to unlocking Zambia’s energy investment potential by creating a predictable and supportive environment.

Timely implementation of such projects is essential to our development goals,” said Minister Chikote, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to facilitating renewable energy investments.

To expedite the project, the Minister directed ZESCO Limited and the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to work closely with LONGi and prioritize the necessary regulatory and operational processes.

LONGi has also requested Government support in identifying a suitable site for the project and in fostering partnerships with local companies—particularly those whose solar projects have stalled due to implementation challenges.

This engagement follows LONGi’s participation as a strategic energy partner during President Hakainde Hichilema’s state visit to China in 2024.

As a global leader in solar technology and one of the world’s largest solar panel manufacturers, LONGi’s investment is expected to enhance Zambia’s energy security, promote green industrialization, and strengthen climate resilience.
