Zambia Signs Major Renewable Energy MoU with Chinese Firms to Develop Large-Scale Solar Projects
The Government of the Republic of Zambia has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Pingmei Shenma Holding Group Company Limited and LONGi Green Energy Technology Company Limited to develop large-scale renewable energy projects, with a primary focus on solar power generation.
The agreement was signed at State House and witnessed by President Hakainde Hichilema. It was executed on behalf of the Zambian Government by the Minister of Energy, Mr Makozo Chikote.
LONGi Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region President, Mr James Jin, and Golden Sun Chairman, Mr Shi Tao, signed on behalf of their respective companies.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation on renewable energy development across Zambia and provides a pathway for investment in up to 1,000 megawatts of solar power capacity.
The initiative represents a significant milestone in Zambia’s efforts to diversify its energy mix, strengthen energy security, and expand clean electricity generation.
The agreement follows President Hichilema’s State visit to China in 2025, during which he held engagements with prospective investors and encouraged their participation in Zambia’s energy sector.
The initiative aligns with the Government’s broader strategy to promote sustainable development, attract foreign direct investment, and develop climate-resilient infrastructure.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation led by LONGi Founder, Mr Li Zhenguo, President Hichilema described the MoU as a positive step for Zambia and a reflection of the deepening, mutually beneficial relationship between Zambia and China.
He noted that the planned investments demonstrate a shared commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and sustainable development.
The President also expressed appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his leadership in fostering international cooperation that supports long-term economic and environmental development.
Mr Li Zhenguo said he was impressed by Zambia’s social stability, public safety, and the general well-being of its citizens, adding that these factors make the country an attractive destination for long-term investment.
Minister Chikote said the MoU represents a major boost to Zambia’s renewable energy ambitions and will play a critical role in expanding electricity generation capacity through clean and sustainable sources.
“The agreement will support economic growth, create jobs, and strengthen climate resilience, while reinforcing the Government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for investors and accelerating the implementation of renewable energy projects,” Mr Chikote said.
