Zambia Launches $80 Million Siavonga Solar Project to Reduce Reliance on Hydropower
Zambia has commenced construction of the 100-megawatt Siavonga solar power project, a key initiative aimed at strengthening the national electricity supply and easing pressure on hydropower generation, which has been affected by local and climate-related challenges.
The $80 million project is being developed by JIGSCO Energy Corporation Limited, a joint venture between state-owned utility ZESCO and Jigsaw Investments, with Power China appointed as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor.
The Siavonga solar plant is expected to reach commercial operation by December 2026. It aligns with Zambia’s Integrated Resource Plan and the 2019 National Energy Policy, which prioritise diversification of the energy mix, reduced power outages, job creation, and broader economic development.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy, Permanent Secretary Arnold Simwaba said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to translating policy objectives into tangible investments.
He noted that expanding solar generation will help mitigate climate risks, enhance energy security, and provide more reliable electricity to support Zambia’s economic growth.
