Venetia Mine Marks Major Safety Milestone with 13 Million Fatality-Free Shifts

De Beers Group’s Venetia diamond mine in Limpopo, South Africa, has reached a remarkable milestone of 13 million fatality-free shifts.

This achievement places Venetia among a select group of mining operations in Southern Africa known for sustained excellence in safety performance.

The milestone reflects the steadfast dedication of the mine’s employees, contractors, and leadership to fostering a safe and supportive work environment.

Over the years, Venetia has implemented numerous proactive safety initiatives focused on building a culture of shared responsibility and vigilance.

A key program is the Safe Sentry initiative, where team members nominate a sentry each shift to monitor, document, and communicate safety behaviors and potential hazards in real time.

“Reaching 13 million fatality-free shifts is a testament to the unwavering commitment of everyone at our mine,” said Ntokozo Ngema, Senior General Manager at De Beers Venetia mine.

“This milestone represents not just a number but a culture of care, accountability, and continuous improvement.

“At Venetia, we believe zero harm is achievable, and this accomplishment brings us closer to making that belief a reality,” he added.

“Our teams embody our values every day and have set a benchmark for safe and responsible mining. While this is an industry-leading performance, we will continue to hold ourselves to the highest standards to ensure the safety of all, so every diamond we produce reflects our commitment to each other.”
