Third Fatality Confirmed Following Cabinda Oil Platform Accident

Authorities have confirmed a third fatality resulting from the oil platform accident that occurred on May 20th off the coast of Cabinda.

The latest victim, one of the 17 individuals injured in the incident, passed away in South Africa, where four of the injured were transferred for specialized medical care. This marks the second death recorded in South Africa linked to the accident.

In addition, a worker who had previously been reported missing was found dead near the platform. Efforts are underway to recover and formally identify the body, according to a joint statement issued by Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET), the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), and Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited (Cabgoc), a subsidiary of U.S.-based Chevron.

The accident occurred during a maintenance operation on the Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) deepwater platform, which is operated by Cabgoc.

Cabgoc, Chevron’s Angolan subsidiary, operates two oil concessions in the country on behalf of its partners.

In Block 0, the partners include Sonangol E.P. (41%), TotalEnergies EP Petroleum (Angola) SAS (10%), and Azule Energy Angola Production B.V.

In Block 14, partners include Sonangol P&P (20%), Angola Block 14 B.V. (20%), Azule Energy Angola (20%), and Etu Energias (9%).
