TGS Completes Reprocessing of 3D Seismic Data in Angola’s Block 16

Energy data and intelligence company TGS, in partnership with Angola’s upstream regulator, the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency, has completed the reprocessing of the GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset for Block 16 in the offshore Lower Congo Basin.

Covering 3,684 km², the dataset enhances imaging capabilities beyond the initial survey, enabling a more detailed evaluation of deeper target plays in both post-salt and pre-salt sections.

The reprocessed data also partially covers marginal fields such as the Tchihumba field, discovered in 2003, which contains hydrocarbon-bearing zones.

“These accumulations, along with the proximity of significant neighboring discoveries, present strong opportunities for future exploration success,” said David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President of Multi-Client at TGS.

Block 16 remains largely underexplored, with the last exploratory well drilled in 2013. Historically, oil and gas discoveries in the block have been limited to the Bengo and Longa Upper Miocene finds in the northern section, discovered in 1994 and 1995, respectively.

However, a recent reassessment of wells in the southern section has revealed potential for oil recovery.

By improving the geological understanding of Block 16, the reprocessed TGS dataset is expected to support renewed exploration efforts in the area.
