Tanzania Positions Itself as a Key Player in East African Energy

Tanzania’s abundant gas reserves, estimated at around 57 trillion cubic feet (tcf), will take center stage at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2024 conference, highlighting the country’s quest for partnerships in exploration, development, and processing ventures.

With significant offshore gas discoveries, Tanzania is poised to become a major LNG exporter, spearheading projects like the Tanzania LNG initiative.

This flagship endeavor, led by Equinor, Shell, and ExxonMobil, aims to produce 10 million metric tons of LNG annually pending the signing of a host government agreement.

Notable gas reserves in Shell’s Blocks 1 and 4 and Equinor’s Block 2 underscore Tanzania’s potential as a regional energy hub.

Moreover, a recent agreement between Tanzania and Uganda signals plans for a pipeline linking Tanzania’s gas fields to Uganda, further enhancing the country’s energy footprint.

Tanzania’s strategic location on the Indian Ocean positions it as a key player in LPG distribution, with initiatives like the Kigamboni LPG Terminal and collaborations such as Taifa Gas’s venture in Zambia.

Additionally, the country’s foray into compressed natural gas infrastructure, exemplified by the launch of a filling station and conversion center in Dar es Salaam, showcases its commitment to diversifying energy sources.

Anticipated oil and gas licensing rounds in Tanzania, slated for launch by June 2024, aim to attract foreign investment and capitalize on the nation’s promising upstream sector.

With 26 blocks, including onshore and offshore acreages, up for tender, Tanzania seeks to accelerate exploration activities and unlock its vast hydrocarbon potential, with companies like CNOOC leading the charge in seismic surveys and exploration efforts.
