Sonangol Takes Lead in “Aiming for Zero Methane” Initiative

Sonangol, Angola’s national oil company, has made history by becoming the first African oil producer to join the “Aiming for Zero Methane” initiative.

This global effort, led by the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), aims to drastically reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas industry.

In a recent statement, Sonangol announced its commitment to achieving nearly zero methane emissions from its oil and gas operations by 2030.

Gaspar Martins, President of Sonangol’s Board of Directors, emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability and the future of the planet.

Bjorn Otto Sverdrup, President of OGCI’s executive committee, expressed satisfaction with Sonangol’s decision to join the initiative.

He welcomed the participation of a major African oil company in efforts to combat methane emissions, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing climate change.

Reducing methane emissions is crucial for meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, and it aligns with the objectives of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, signed during COP28 in Dubai.

Sonangol’s participation underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and advancing global sustainability efforts.
