Sonangol Highlights Critical Minerals and Lubricants Portfolio at Mining Indaba 2026 in Cape Town
Angola’s state energy company, Sonangol, is participating for the first time in Mining Indaba 2026, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.
The company’s primary objective is to present its emerging mining projects, with a particular emphasis on critical minerals aligned with the global energy transition.
In a statement, Sonangol said its participation reflects a strategic focus on research and prospecting for critical minerals that support sustainable development and low-carbon technologies.
The initiative forms part of the company’s broader effort to diversify its portfolio beyond traditional oil and gas operations.
According to Mauro Graça, President of Sonangol’s Executive Committee, the company is advancing a critical minerals project currently in the prospecting and development phase.
The project is aimed at producing quartz, a key raw material used in the manufacture of solar panels and other photovoltaic components.
Graça noted that the initiative complements Sonangol’s involvement in electricity generation projects, particularly in photovoltaic energy, where solar infrastructure plays a central role.
He emphasized that expanding into mining supports the company’s long-term transition strategy and integration into new energy value chains.
In addition to mining exploration, Sonangol is also presenting its lubricants portfolio at the conference. Through its Distribution and Marketing division, the company is promoting products tailored to the extractive industry.
Sonangol operates Angola’s only lubricant manufacturing facility, positioning it to supply both the mining sector and other strategic industries.
The company’s delegation includes representatives from Sonangol Distribution and Marketing, its Research and Development Center, and the Critical Minerals Project team.
The integrated presence is intended to demonstrate the company’s capacity to participate across multiple segments of the mining value chain.
Sonangol stated that its participation at Mining Indaba 2026 also aims to strengthen brand visibility, attract potential investors, and establish strategic partnerships.
Angola is represented at the conference by an official delegation led by the Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo.
The event runs through Thursday and is widely regarded as Africa’s largest annual mining investment conference.
