Sonangol, ENDE and ANPG: Key Players in Angola’s Economic Growth and Job Creation

Companies such as Sonangol, the National Electricity Distribution Company (ENDE) and the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) are identified as fundamental to the country’s economic growth, acting as actors for the increase in the Gross Domestic Product, in the creation of jobs and essential services to citizens.

According to the platform for investment in the energy sector on the continent, the unprecedented growth that the country has been experiencing in the energy sector, with the participation of the private sector, are about to offer opportunities for investors and project developers in the country.

The platform points to Sonangol as one of the largest companies in Africa in oil production.

It states that, being the cornerstone of economic success, it is the exclusive licensee for oil and gas exploration in the country and plays a decisive role in monetizing natural gas reserves, guaranteeing the supply of energy in the regional market.

Through its strategic partnerships, he says that the oil company has proved to be essential for the development of a sustainable economy through the introduction of tax incentives, the opening of licensing rounds and the implementation of regulatory reforms.

The National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), created in 2019, was created to ensure effective political coordination and improve conditions for private investment activities in the national oil industry.

It is responsible for negotiating new agreements and organizing tenders with various players in the oil and gas blocks, through the development of exploration activities.

As part of ANPG’s efforts to tender more than 50 blocks between 2019 and 2025, the concessionaire announced that it will launch a tender for the exploration of onshore basins in the Baixo Congo and Kwanza basins, in Angola.

The tender is scheduled for the end of September of the current year and will be open to national and foreign entities.

With regard to the National Electricity Distribution Company (ENDE), the entity says that since electricity is considered a critical component for the socio-economic development of the country, an ambitious interconnection project foresees the connection of three regional electricity grids.

These are the north, center and south networks, to create a national network with higher voltage levels.

The project will be supervised by ENDE and the Ministry of Energy and Water and will result in an increase in the number of substations and an interconnected transmission line of 16,359 kilometers that will support rural and urban electrification.
