Sonangol confirms additional oil in “Block Kon 11”

Sonangol announced, on Thursday 11th January, in a statement, that it had confirmed the prevalence of oil in a second evaluation well in Block 11 of the Kwanza Onshore Basin, called Kon 11, after drilling operations concluded on December 21, 2023.

The document indicates that the operations were carried out by the   Exploration and Production Business Unit (UNEP), having occurred “at a considerable depth” and that the drilling, considered “very positive”, resulted in the confirmation of the existence of oil in almost the entire reservoir thickness, significantly increasing the remaining potential of the Tobias field.

The production capacity of the well will be verified after tests to be carried out shortly, the statement said, adding that the successful drilling of the well, named Tobias 14, associated with the also successful operation in the Tobias 13 well, catapults the Sonangol, as operator.

The company’s partners in this concession are the companies Apex, Brite’s Oil, Grupo Simples and Omega, planning the reactivation of production in the Kwanza Onshore Basin for the end of the current year.

The Kwanza Onshore Basin has been inactive since the 1990s, with UNEP and its partners from the KON-11 Onshore Block being the authors of the return of oil activity in that region, states the statement.

The chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonangol, Sebastião Gaspar Martins, included drilling operations in blocks Kon11 and 12 among the actions that, in 2023, reinforced the company’s positioning in the oil and gas sector, in a New Year’s message in recent days of December addressed to workers.

“Sonangol has reinforced its positioning in the Oil and Natural Gas sector, with the increase in production in operated blocks and the resumption of onshore oil exploration activity”, declared the chairman of the Board of Directors, when announcing the relevant facts of the company’s evolution during that year.
