Somaliland Targets 2027 Start for Oil and Mineral Exploration

Somaliland Plans to Launch Oil and Mineral Exploration by 2027, President Irro Says

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, widely known as Irro, has announced that the region expects to formally begin oil and mineral exploration by 2027.

Speaking at the opening of the Somaliland Mining and Natural Resources Exhibition, President Irro said the region possesses significant untapped natural resources.

He emphasized that the government is committed to developing these resources within a clear regulatory framework and with full transparency to ensure they deliver tangible benefits to the public.

“I am pleased to inform the people of Somaliland that oil exploration in the country is expected to begin by the end of 2027,” President Irro said.

He noted that Somaliland currently has no active oil exploration agreements in place but is actively seeking international partners to enter the sector.

As part of these efforts, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, Engineer Ahmed Jama Barre, visited the United Arab Emirates in July, where he presented Somaliland’s oil and mineral investment opportunities to government officials and private sector companies.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals following the visit, several companies expressed readiness to invest directly in Somaliland.

Others showed interest in acquiring oil exploration blocks either independently or in partnership with other firms.
