Sintana Energy Secures One-Year Extension for Namibia’s PEL 79, Boosting Offshore Exploration Prospects
Sintana Energy has secured a one-year extension for its Petroleum Exploration License 79 (PEL 79) in Namibia’s Orange Basin, now valid through July 2026.
The extension, granted by Namibia’s Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, covers exploration blocks 2815 and 2915.
PEL 79 is held through a joint venture between NAMCOR and Giraffe Energy Investments, with NAMCOR acting as operator. Sintana holds an indirect 49% interest in Giraffe, giving it a significant stake in the license.
The license area lies adjacent to blocks held by BW Energy, Rhino Resources, and Shell, and benefits from a solid base of existing data, including nearly 5,000 kilometers of 2D seismic, over 1,100 square kilometers of 3D seismic, and a well that encountered gas in the Kudu source rock.
Located within a promising sub-basin, PEL 79 is attracting increasing interest. Rhino Resources’ nearby Capricornus-1X discovery has flowed over 11,000 barrels of light oil per day, with further drilling planned at the Volans prospect in 2025.
Similarly, BW Energy is intensifying activity near PEL 79 by acquiring new seismic data on PEL 3 and preparing to drill the Kharas well later this year.
Sintana Energy’s leadership described the extension as timely and strategic, anticipating significant developments across its offshore Namibian assets in the coming months, with PEL 79 positioned as a key opportunity for impactful progress.
