Sintana Energy Advances Appraisal Campaign in Namibia’s Orange Basin with Promising Mopane Well

Sintana Energy has provided an update on its second exploration and appraisal campaign in Namibia’s Orange Basin, a prominent area in global oil and gas exploration on blocks 2813A and 2814B.

These blocks are governed by Petroleum Exploration License 83 (PEL 83), operated by a subsidiary of Galp Energia, with Sintana holding an indirect 49% interest in Custos Energy (Pty) Ltd., which in turn has a 10% working interest in PEL 83. Namibia’s National Petroleum Corporation (NAMCOR) also holds a 10% stake.

The drillship Santorini has arrived at the site, initiating operations for the Mopane 1-A well as of 11:30 PM local time on October 23rd.

This well is part of a larger four-well program potentially consisting of two exploration and two appraisal wells, aimed at further evaluating the scope and quality of the Mopane complex.

Previous campaign reports from Galp and Custos, dating back to Q1 and Q2 2024, highlighted the success of an initial two-well exploration campaign launched in late 2023.

This campaign led to several significant light oil discoveries in high-quality reservoir sands, resulting in an original oil-in-place (OOIP) estimate of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

A drill stem test conducted at that time produced an infrastructure-limited flow rate of 14,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d).

Preliminary assessments indicate that the Mopane reservoirs exhibit excellent porosity, high pressure, and permeability across substantial hydrocarbon columns, featuring low-viscosity oil with no CO2 or H2S.

The successful flow rates achieved during testing position Mopane as a potential commercial discovery.

“We are excited about the progress on PEL 83 and the potential of the Mopane complex. This exploration campaign will expand our understanding of this world-class opportunity and strengthen our portfolio in the Orange Basin,” said Robert Bose, Chief Executive Officer of Sintana Energy.
