Senegal and Angola Collaborate to Enhance Hydrocarbon Expertise

Senegal, which plans to start oil and gas production in 2024, is interested in acquiring Angolan expertise in the field of hydrocarbons, stated the Director of Exploration and Production of the National Oil Company of Senegal, PetroSen, in Luanda.

Joseph Oufon Medou told the Jornal de Angola on the sidelines of the 4th Annual Oil and Gas Exhibition Conference (Angola Oil and Gas 2023), held in the capital of Angola last Wednesday and Thursday, that Senegal is interested in acquiring Angolan expertise in the research, exploration, and production of crude oil, in order to develop its economy and benefit the African continent.

“Senegal is planning to produce oil and gas starting next year, and we were in Angola during the Annual Oil and Gas Conference with the aim of acquiring the experience and know-how for the future development of this sector in our country. Angola has been producing oil for more than 70 years, and it is important for us to absorb knowledge from this sister country,” said Joseph Oufon Medou.

The Director of Exploration and Production at PetroSen said that the idea of seeking Angolan expertise arose during the visit of Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, to Angola in May of last year.

Joseph Oufon Medou indicated that Senegal’s strategy for the use of oil and gas includes a portion of the production being used in the pharmaceutical and fertilizer industries.

Following the discussions held with Senegal in May of last year, one of the announced decisions focused on sharing Angola’s extensive experience in the petroleum sector with that West African country.

President João Lourenço and his Senegalese counterpart informed the press at the time that cooperation in this field is part of the commitments signed in Luanda.

Macky Sall emphasized the interest in harnessing Angola’s knowledge in terms of regulatory frameworks, negotiations with multinational oil companies, the adoption of contracts with multinational corporations, and technical training of personnel.

It is worth noting that after the discovery of over one billion barrels of oil and 120 tons of natural gas in the waters of Senegal and Mauritania since 2014, several projects are underway in that country, with a strong impact expected on the transformation of the economy of West Africa in the next five years.
