Cuanza Sul Expands Access to Electricity: Quibala Project Benefits 170,000 Residents
The residents of Cuanza Sul are now enjoying greater access to electricity following the inauguration of the Quibala electrification project this Thursday. The ceremony was led by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, who also launched new electrification works in the municipalities of Ebo and Conde.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Water, obtained by VerAngola, Minister Borges, accompanied by the Governor of Cuanza Sul, Narciso Benedito, visited the province to oversee the projects.
“Flanked by officials from the Ministry, he inaugurated the Quibala electrification project and launched the electrification works for Ebo and Conde,” the statement said.
The Quibala project will directly benefit nearly 170,000 people. It includes over 85 kilometers of low, medium, and high-voltage lines, 38 transformer substations, and 2,579 household connections. The initiative is also expected to reduce environmental impact by saving more than 412,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
Electrification projects in Ebo and Conde are scheduled for completion in July 2026. These projects feature the construction of a 230/30 kV substation, a 95-kilometer medium-voltage network, a 38-kilometer primary low-voltage network, a 22-kilometer secondary low-voltage network, 31 transformer substations, 3,000 household connections, and 600 public lighting points.
Minister Borges also visited ongoing electrification works in Seles and Conde. In Conda, the medium and low-voltage distribution network is being expanded with a 41.5-kilometer medium-voltage line, 11 transformers, a 20-kilometer low-voltage network, and 800 household connections.
In Seles, the electrification project is over 90% complete, including a 60 kV overhead transmission line of 55 kilometers, a 25-kilometer overhead distribution network, a 28-kilometer low-voltage network, 750 streetlights, and approximately 1,500 household connections, expected to be completed in March 2026.
During his visit, Minister Borges toured Sumbe, inspecting the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) serving about 35,000 residents, with 2,500 household connections, a 38-kilometer collector network, and five pumping stations. This infrastructure allows controlled discharge of septic tank trucks and enhances sludge management.
The project has also expanded the water supply network to an additional 40,000 residents through 4,289 new connections, 63 public fountains, and a 95.8-kilometer network expansion.
A provincial laboratory for water and wastewater monitoring has been constructed, equipped to analyze 47 physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters, ensuring compliance with sanitary standards.
On Friday, Minister Borges will continue his fact-finding mission to energy and water projects in the municipality of Waku-Kungo.
“These projects are part of a comprehensive initiative to electrify most of Cuanza Sul, expanding the electricity grid to rural and suburban areas, enhancing public services, and bringing electricity to more families, delivering significant social and economic benefits,” the ministry stated.
