Ports in Angola discuss the state of infrastructure

Security specialists, professionals and managers, managers of ports, maritime terminals and other operators, as well as port captaincies, recently participated in a round table on the theme “The importance of corridors in the growth of ports and the economy national” and at the symposium “Improving security in ports in Angola”.

According to a document that JA had access to yesterday, 13 feb the two events were organized by the Association of Ports of Angola (APANG).

The symposium recommended the training of staff in the port sector with responsibilities in terms of maritime safety and security, both at an institutional, operational and regulatory level.

The 210 delegates who participated in the event also recommended defining, in practical terms, the relationship model between the National Maritime Agency (AMN) and the ports, to avoid conflicts of competence between the two entities, as well as urging the related bodies to “work on the implementation of the regulations of Law 211/22, of 23 July.

This law, according to the document, qualifies as public domain all land on the coastline, located in areas under the jurisdiction of maritime and port authorities.

The symposium, which was an initiative of the Ministry of Transport, organized by APANG and AMN, with the support of the Port of Lobito, also called for the need for ports to draw up safety and risk mitigation plans, including the exercise of simulations .

Regarding the round table “The importance of corridors in the growth of ports and the national economy”, the participants stressed that the global index of logistics performance depends, on the one hand, on the quality of transport and trade infrastructures and, on the other hand, another, the quality of services.

For the participants, the success of the ongoing reforms and the country’s economic growth, mitigating its dependence on oil, pass through the creation of a logistics network.

They underlined, on the other hand, that there is an urgent need for a national port logistics plan as a subsectoral planning and strategic management document, given its importance for maximizing port infrastructure, for complementarity between ports, the improvement of their performance and its affirmation as boosters of the competitiveness of the national economy.

APANG is an organization that brings together port companies and terminal operators, established in 2014. It was created with the aim of ensuring the defense and promotion of the interests of its members and contributing to the development and modernization of the Angolan port system.
