Brazilian state-owned energy giant Petrobras has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Angola’s national oil company, Sonangol, to collaborate on research and development in the oil and gas sector.
The agreement was formalized during Angolan President João Lourenço’s state visit to Brazil in May 2025, which focused on deepening trade and energy ties between the two nations.
Both President Lourenço and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the oil, gas, and related sectors.
This MoU builds on a previous agreement signed in March 2025 between Petrobras and Angola’s upstream regulator, the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG), aimed at jointly studying offshore acreage in Angola.
The latest partnership with Sonangol is expected to enhance collaboration in exploration and production, opening new opportunities in Angola’s energy sector.
Petrobras’ renewed engagement in Angola is driven in part by the geological similarities between the two countries, which offer promising prospects for offshore oil and gas development in southern Africa.
