Nigeria Vows Reliable Gas Supply to Togo, Benin, and Ghana to Tackle Energy Poverty
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a steady supply of gas from Nigeria to Togo, the Benin Republic, and Ghana in a bid to tackle energy poverty and drive economic growth across West Africa.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, made the pledge during a meeting with the outgoing and incoming managing directors of the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Louis Ibah, Ekpo emphasized that the Tinubu administration remains firmly dedicated to using gas as a tool for regional development.
As Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the West African Gas Pipeline, he noted that Nigeria has made significant progress in recent years through investments in infrastructure, reductions in gas flaring, and increased supply for both domestic use and exports.
Ekpo underscored President Bola Tinubu’s vision of eradicating energy poverty in Nigeria, the West African subregion, and the continent at large, describing reliable gas supply as a foundation for powering industries and accelerating economic growth.
He commended outgoing WAPCo Managing Director, Ms. Michelle Burkett, for her impactful leadership and pledged government support to her successor, Mr. Abiodun Bodunrin.
Bodunrin, in his remarks, assured that his priority would be to guarantee uninterrupted gas supply from Nigeria to consumers across the region.
He also called for continued government support to boost WAPCo’s performance and regional impact.
