Nigeria and Germany Launch €20 Million Renewable Energy Partnership

Nigeria and Germany have entered into a €20 million partnership aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy and supporting its broader clean energy objectives.

The initiative will be implemented through the KfW Development Bank in collaboration with the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund, according to the Nigerian Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

This partnership features an initial €20 million grant and a formal project agreement focused on promoting environmentally sustainable development across Nigeria.

The agreement was signed in Abuja, with Nigeria represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

Representing Germany were Dr. Karin Jansen, First Secretary and Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy, and Gerald Keuhnemund of the KfW Development Bank.

Minister Bagudu outlined three primary objectives of the project: increasing the use of renewable energy for improved efficiency, strengthening technical training in renewable technologies, and reducing Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels.

He emphasized that the initiative would expand electricity access in underserved communities while fostering economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth.

He also stressed the importance of building a skilled workforce to ensure long-term progress in the energy sector.

Bagudu called on development partners, including the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund, to coordinate their efforts for greater impact and avoid overlapping interventions—especially in critical sectors like health and education.

Dr. Jansen praised the agreement as a significant milestone, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Germany’s Energy Transition Challenge Fund.

She affirmed that the fund would prioritize high-impact renewable energy projects, reinforcing Germany’s ongoing support for Nigeria’s clean energy agenda.
