The Namibian Government will sign a feasibility and implementation agreement (FIA) with green hydrogen development company Hyphen Hydrogen Energy for the country’s $10 billion green hydrogen project, to be located in the Namib Desert’s Tsau//Khaeb National Park.
The deal is expected to be signed on Friday, May 26, and marks the next phase of the project’s development. It also outlines the terms of offtake, which involve exporting Namibian green hydrogen to Europe.
The FIA provides a detailed plan for the project’s development and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of both Hyphen and the Namibian Government. Hyphen will be responsible for the technical, financial, environmental, social, and commercial aspects of the project, with implementation pending final approval from the Government.
Both the Namibian Government and Hyphen view the FIA as a benchmark for the development of sustainable and equitable green hydrogen projects. Namibian President Hage Geingob believes that the project has the potential to transform the lives of many in Namibia, the region, and the world.
President Geingob expressed gratitude to development partners, including the European Union Commission, for their unwavering support to Namibia so far.
Hyphen stated that the Namibian Government will ensure the necessary legal, fiscal, and regulatory environment for the project’s implementation.
The FIA consists of five stages, each dependent on the completion of prerequisite phases. These stages include the preliminary phase, feasibility phase, validation phase, financing and construction phase, and finally, the operation phase. During the operation phase, the project aims to produce up to two million tons of green ammonia for regional and global markets.
