Namibia Aims for 400 MW of Renewable Energy by 2030 to Boost Economy and Energy Security

Namibia Targets 367–400 MW Renewable Energy Capacity by 2030 to Drive Industrial Growth and Job Creation

Namibia is targeting between 367 and 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, focusing primarily on solar and biomass projects.

Eduardo Rodriguez, Chairperson of the Namibia Petroleum Operators Association, said the planned expansion will enhance energy security, support industrial growth, and help the country meet its climate commitments.

“Renewables are a fundamental component of Namibia’s economic diversification strategy. The sector is aligned with the national development plan and contributes directly to GDP growth, employment, and long-term sustainability,” Rodriguez said.

He noted that local solar photovoltaic production could contribute up to N$37 billion to the economy while creating around 800 direct jobs, highlighting the sector’s role as both a clean energy source and a driver of inclusive economic growth.

Rodriguez added that although renewable projects do not require direct state funding, they rely on a stable policy and regulatory environment to attract investment.

“This would encourage both domestic and international investors to participate in scaling up Namibia’s renewable capacity,” he explained.

He emphasized that renewable energy aligns with government targets and could reduce dependence on imported electricity, urging policymakers to maintain Namibia’s reputation for stability and investor friendliness, which has already attracted significant investment in the oil and gas sector.

Rodriguez also highlighted that the renewable sector offers a sustainable path to industrialisation, with the potential to transform local communities through job creation and value addition.

“Continued cooperation between government and the private sector will be essential for Namibia to achieve its 2030 energy goals,” he concluded.
