Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has announced plans to increase the country’s cooking gas supply capacity by 60,000 tons in the coming quarter.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to address 60% of Mozambique’s domestic energy consumption needs.
President Nyusi revealed that a new gas production facility is under construction in Inhassoro, located in Inhambane province.
The factory is expected to become operational next year, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and alleviate the demand for charcoal as a primary energy source.
Speaking in Tete on Saturday, President Nyusi emphasized the project’s triple benefits: enhancing domestic energy self-sufficiency, reducing import reliance, and supporting environmental conservation by minimizing charcoal usage.
On the topic of universal electricity access, the president announced that 518,577 new electricity connections have been established in Mozambique this year.
Of these, 362,896 households were connected to the national grid, while the remainder benefited from stand-alone systems.
These developments reflect Mozambique’s commitment to advancing energy access and sustainability for its population.
