Mozambique Signs Energy Agreements with Zambia and Zimbabwe to Boost Regional Integration

The Government of Mozambique, through the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, has signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Republics of Zambia and Zimbabwe, reinforcing a shared commitment to regional energy integration, industrialization, and sustainable development in Southern Africa.

The MoUs were signed during the 11th Mining and Energy Conference (MMEC) in Maputo and align with the goals of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The agreement with Zambia lays the groundwork for the development of a gas pipeline linking the Mozambican city of Beira to Ndola in Zambia.

Designed to transport up to 3.5 million metric tons of petroleum products annually, the pipeline will ensure a more stable, efficient, and cost-effective fuel supply for Zambia.

The project is also expected to boost economic activity in Beira by increasing traffic through its fuel terminal and creating both direct and indirect jobs.

The MoU with Zimbabwe focuses on enhancing cooperation in electricity supply, generation, and transmission.

It also includes provisions to facilitate fuel trade and the development of energy infrastructure, supporting Zimbabwe’s industrial growth and promoting broader regional energy integration.

“These agreements go beyond technical cooperation; they reflect a shared vision of interdependence and mutual progress.

Mozambique is consolidating its role as a strategic energy corridor in the SADC region, contributing to regional energy security and improving our trade balance through energy exports,” said Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy.

The signed MoUs signal a coordinated effort by Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to ensure a more stable, sustainable, and prosperous energy future for the region.
