Mozambique and Germany have signed a €500,000 financing agreement to support the development of the Green Hydrogen Project in Mozambique, aiming to diversify the country’s energy matrix.
“The promotion of green hydrogen in Mozambique can help diversify energy supply, create job opportunities, and drive industrial and infrastructure development,” said Ronald Münch, Germany’s ambassador to Mozambique, in a joint statement.
The agreement was signed between Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and the German Development Bank (KfW), which is providing the funding. An international tender will be launched to facilitate the project’s implementation.
Ambassador Münch highlighted Mozambique’s abundant renewable energy resources—water, solar, and wind—which provide ideal conditions for green hydrogen production.
“The study will take six to nine months, after which we will begin applying this environmentally friendly technology, leveraging the country’s vast natural resources,” said Joaquim Ou-Chim, chairman of EDM’s board.
The funding will be used to hire specialized consultants to conduct market studies for green hydrogen initiatives. This resource is seen as a key element in Mozambique’s energy transition strategy.
“Our goal is to ensure that we can not only use green hydrogen domestically but also export it along with by-products such as oxygen and ammonia, which are essential for agricultural fertilizers,” said Mozambique’s National Energy Director, Marcelina Mataveia.
The project is expected to contribute to Mozambique’s economic growth while supporting global efforts toward cleaner energy solutions.
