On Thursday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi inaugurated a solar power station in the Bazaruto Archipelago, located in the Inhassoro district of Inhambane province.
The solar power station, a result of a partnership between the state-owned electricity company EDM and the National Energy Fund (FUNAE), will enable over 400 new electricity connections in the surrounding communities of Pangaia and Sithone.
President Nyusi emphasized the positive impact of the new power plant, stating that it will bring significant improvements to the tourist archipelago of Bazaruto, eliminating the local population’s previous struggles with electricity shortages.
“We celebrate the inauguration of this electricity connection in Bazaruto, using solar energy, which is cleaner and more environmentally friendly,” Nyusi said.
He noted that the solar energy network on Bazaruto complements the electricity produced from natural gas, which previously served only tourist centers.
“These infrastructures demonstrate our unwavering commitment to bringing development to every corner of our country,” Nyusi stated.
He acknowledged the patience of community leaders since the electrification program for administrative posts began in 2020, highlighting the advanced stage of progress in the province.
Nyusi also mentioned that the tourist resorts on the islands of Bazaruto, Nguessa, São Sebastião, and Magarruque have benefited from an electricity network powered by independent generators using natural gas.
This gas is sourced from the Panda and Temane fields and delivered via an 86-kilometer underwater pipeline.
