Motsomi Shows off Debswana’s Prowess at Us-Africa Business Summit

In a remarkable display of pride and confidence, the Managing Director of Debswana, the world’s leading diamond producer by value, highlighted the company’s exceptional accomplishments during the ongoing US-Africa Business Summit.

Andrew Motsomi took the opportunity to underscore the remarkable contributions that Debswana has made to the economy of Botswana and its transformation from being one of the world’s poorest nations to an upper middle-income economy.

“We produce between 22 to 24 million carats per annum. We are famed for unearthing some of the most beautiful and valuable stones on planet earth,” said Motsomi.

“In recent years, in 2019 we discovered one of the purest and rarest types of diamond, blue in colour, from Orapa Mine.

“A year later, there was the rarest pink diamond from our youngest mine, Damtshaa mine. Two years later, we were blessed with another huge find from Jwaneng Mine, a 1098 carat stone.

“It seems there is no limit to what we can scoop from the earth.”

These incredible discoveries have solidified Debswana’s standing as a premier diamond producer in the world. Debswana operates four mines; Jwaneng Mine, Orapa Mine, Letlhakane Mine and Damtshaa Mine.

The Managing Director attributed Debswana’s remarkable achievements not only to luck but to meticulous planning and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

“We continually seek the best methods and technologies available in the industry. By employing world-class technology, we effectively mine these precious jewels from the depths of the earth,” Mr. Motsomi explained.

He further highlighted the company’s commitment to driving productivity improvements and highlighted their processing plants, which have garnered accolades for their efficiency and performance.

However, Motsomi urged guests at the summit to remember that the significance of Debswana’s diamonds extends beyond their beauty and value.

“When you purchase diamond jewelry, you are contributing to the development of Botswana’s economy,” he stated.

He said the proceeds from diamond sales have played a crucial role in various developmental initiatives, and continue to contribute in human development such advancing digital literacy in rural areas and providing essential healthcare services to children in need across the country.

Debswana is a 50/50 joint venture between the Government of Botswana and De Beers Group. The company celebrated its 54 years last month.

Following successful conclusion of negotiations between Government of Botswana and De Beers a fortnight ago, the partnership has been extended until at least 2054.
