Morocco to Launch 2025 Tenders for Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline

Morocco is set to initiate tenders in 2025 for the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, focusing on sections within Moroccan territory.

This milestone is part of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines’ (ONHYM) 2025 Action Plan, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.

The pipeline’s first phase will span Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, with additional gas transport agreements expected next year.

A dedicated private company will oversee the project’s construction, operation, and maintenance, as outlined in a project document reviewed by the news outlet.

Stretching approximately 5,600 kilometers, the pipeline will traverse 16 countries along Africa’s Atlantic coast. It will connect to the Morocco-Europe gas pipeline and integrate with the European gas network, enhancing its impact on both African and European energy markets.

Described as a transformative initiative, the pipeline underscores Morocco’s commitment to fostering economic integration and development across Africa.

“This is a project for peace, for African economic integration, and for co-development: a project for the present and for future generations,” King Mohammed VI emphasized in a 2022 address.

The project is expected to benefit over 340 million people, with 1,672 kilometers of the pipeline routed through Morocco.

Significant progress has been made in securing international partnerships. In June 2023, ONHYM signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and operators in the Republic of Guinea, Liberia, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Additionally, Morocco and Nigeria have formalized agreements with Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Ghana.

These collaborations highlight the unified commitment of participating nations to advance this strategic project, which holds promise for economic growth and energy access across the region.
