Kosmos Energy Begins LNG Exports from Mauritania-Senegal GTA Project as Output Hits 2.4M Tonnes

Kosmos Energy Launches Commercial Operations at Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG Project

Kosmos Energy has officially commenced commercial operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, located offshore Mauritania and Senegal, marking a major milestone for West Africa’s energy sector.

According to a statement from Kosmos—listed on both the NYSE and LSE—the project’s floating LNG production unit, Gimi, has reached its Commercial Operations Date under a 20-year Lease and Operate Agreement.

The Gimi FLNG, with a design capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per year, is owned and operated by global maritime infrastructure provider Golar LNG, and leased to the GTA project as part of its midstream infrastructure.

Golar LNG described the achievement as a significant milestone for one of Africa’s most complex deepwater energy projects and a breakthrough for Mauritania and Senegal, now officially part of the global LNG export market.

The upstream component of the GTA project is led by BP, which holds a 56% stake, followed by Kosmos Energy (27%), Senegal’s national oil company Petrosen (9%), and Mauritania’s Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) (8%).

The midstream assets, including the FLNG unit, are owned by a joint venture in which BP holds 60%, Kosmos 30%, and Petrosen and SMH collectively 10%.

Situated about 120 kilometers offshore in waters as deep as 2,850 meters, the GTA project taps into some of the continent’s most technically challenging natural gas reserves.

The estimated recoverable reserves total approximately 15 trillion cubic feet (425 billion cubic meters). Both governments have declared the GTA a project of strategic national importance.

Phase 1 of the project reached its Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2018. LNG production began in February 2025, with the first export shipment completed in April. Since then, a second and third shipment were delivered in May and early June, and a fourth shipment is currently being loaded.

A fifth shipment is expected in early Q3, bringing Kosmos’ projected Q2 deliveries to 3.5 cargoes.

Production has now ramped up to 2.4 million tonnes per year, approximately 90% of the plant’s nameplate capacity.

Kosmos credited strong collaboration among all project partners, including Golar LNG, for achieving this milestone and ensuring smooth logistics.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the GTA project is expected to double annual output to 5 million tonnes, further establishing Mauritania and Senegal as emerging players in the global LNG market.

Kosmos continues to deepen its presence across Africa, with current production assets in Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Mauritania, and Senegal.

The company is also actively exploring in Namibia’s Orange Basin, targeting what could be a significant new oil discovery.
