Angola and Germany discussed, yesterday 15th February, at the Intercontinental Hotel, in Luanda, the basic conditions for the development of the National Hydrogen Strategy in Angola.
A note states that the topic has been addressed since mid-2021, in various dialogue initiatives between the two countries, focused on energy transition and the opportunities that green hydrogen can offer the country.
According to the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, hydrogen can make a very important contribution to the production of food in a sustainable way, also indicating another product, which is green ammonia, essential for soil fertilization .
He made it known that, in the middle of this year, there will be a conference during which Angola will present the main strategic lines for hydrogen, being necessary, in this period, to have this strategy defined, with well-established objectives.
The German Economy delegate in Angola, Vandré Spellmeier, highlighted the partnership that was established between Sonangol and the German consortium Gauff Engineering / Conjuncta, to develop the first green hydrogen plant in Angola.
Vandré Spellmeier expressed conviction that the meeting will be an important step towards accelerating the various ongoing initiatives related to hydrogen and energy transition.
He maintained that the recommendations and contributions coming out of the forum will allow Angola to position itself in the international arena as an important player in the field of hydrogen, as the country has ideal conditions and good infrastructure to be at the forefront of African production of green hydrogen. on a commercial scale.
For the specialist, Angola will gain from the introduction of a hydrogen economy, as it contributes to the development of local sub-industries and to the creation of a product for export, which will, of course, help in the diversification of the economy.
He made it known that specific studies are underway on hydrogen in Angola, which will soon be published. Alongside this, a regional hydrogen conference is being organized, for the 31st to the 2nd of June, under the supervision of the Government of Angola, which will include the participation of Namibia and South Africa, but not only.
The meeting, which was attended by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, the German ambassador accredited to Angola, Stefan Traumann, the Secretary of State for Oil and Gas, José Barroso, representing the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Pedro Azevedo, recommended the creation of an intersectoral working group, for a better deepening of the strategy.
