Huambo’s Rare Earth Exploration Set to Begin in 2026

Tim George, the executive director of Pensana, has indicated that exploration of Huambo’s rare earths could commence as early as 2026.

This timeline is contingent upon the completion of prospecting activities, which have been ongoing since 2015, and the initiation of infrastructure construction this year.

During a meeting with Angelino Elavoco, Vice-Governor of Huambo, Tim George outlined plans that could generate approximately 1,090 direct jobs.

These positions include 650 jobs during the infrastructure construction phase and an additional 440 jobs during the exploration phase.

In addition to job creation, the project aims to implement social programs to benefit local communities, with a focus on sustainable agriculture and vocational training for youth in the mining sector.

Tim George emphasized the importance of utilizing local human resources, particularly skilled youth from Huambo, to bolster employment opportunities in the region.

The Ozango Mineral project has been instrumental in promoting professionalization among Huambo’s youth, particularly in Longonjo municipality, where the rare earths are located.

Backed by an initial investment of around $200 million, investors are keen to contribute to economic growth programs, particularly within the Lobito Corridor, while showcasing Huambo’s mining potential.

The project is aligned with the Ozango Mineral program, which has been designed for Longonjo over the next two decades. Construction of infrastructure in Longonjo is set to commence in the near future as part of a 12-month program.

Huambo’s rare earths reserve comprises 17 types of minerals, including neodymium, lanthanum, and cerium, which are essential raw materials for various technological devices, such as cell phones.

This exploration initiative is poised to diversify the economy and stimulate employment in the region, with strong support from the provincial government.
