The Gold Refinery project in the municipality of Viana, Luanda, is on track for completion, with expectations of inauguration in the first half of 2025, announced Domingos Baptista, the general director of Geoangol.
Speaking at the Workshop on Mineral Resources and the Gold Value Chain in Huambo province, Baptista stated that the construction progress stands at 50%, with anticipation for completion by the end of the year.
Baptista emphasized that the refinery project involves 23 technicians who have undergone specialized training in Portugal, where they gained hands-on experience with the equipment and technologies to be utilized in the refinery.
“Our technicians have trained on the same equipment that will be used in our refinery. They are currently undergoing additional training and will receive on-the-job training during the equipment assembly phase. This will enable us to locally manufacture gold bars,” he explained.
The ongoing project has received assistance from countries with a mining tradition, particularly in precious metals, including Portugal, Tanzania, and Ghana, as noted by the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas.
Situated in the Viana Industrial Complex, the refinery, with a budget of seven million dollars, commenced construction in October 2022 following the laying of the foundation stone in June of the same year.
Upon completion, it is expected to have a refining capacity of approximately 25 kilograms of gold per day.
