Germany Backs Namibia’s Hyphen Green Hydrogen Project

Namibia’s groundbreaking Hyphen green hydrogen project received a significant boost last week as the German government extended its support.

Enertrag, a joint venture between Hyphen Hydrogen Energy and Nicholas Holdings, is at the forefront of this venture.

The German government has designated the Hyphen project as a strategic foreign project, making it eligible for targeted support, indicative of its global strategic importance.

This initiative marks a crucial step towards establishing a large-scale green hydrogen industry in Namibia, aligning with global decarbonization efforts.

Expected to produce 350,000 tons of green hydrogen and two million tons of green ammonia annually by the end of the decade, the Hyphen project aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation.

Construction is slated to commence in January 2025, with the first phase set for completion by the end of 2026.

Namibia’s government has also expressed its commitment by acquiring a 24% equity stake in the project, highlighting its significance for the nation’s economic growth.

The signing of a letter of intent between German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Dr. Robert Habeck and Enertrag CEO Dr. Gunar Hering underscores the strong international collaboration driving this project forward.

Namibian Mines and Energy Minister Tom Alweendo hailed the project as pivotal for Namibia’s synthetic fuels industry aspirations.

The Hyphen project not only represents a milestone in energy transition but also symbolizes international cooperation in building new energy-trade partnerships.

With support from Germany, this endeavor is poised to spearhead global decarbonization efforts while creating significant socio-economic benefits for Namibia.
