German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Robert Habeck, and Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, have inked an agreement to bolster the Green Hydrogen Namibia Program, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy collaboration.
The newly formed initiative aims to cultivate local hydrogen value chains, drive green industrialization, and conduct comprehensive environmental impact assessments for pertinent projects, laying the groundwork for a greener future.
In a show of support, Germany has officially endorsed Namibia’s flagship Hyphen Hydrogen Energy facility, Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest green hydrogen endeavor.
This endorsement, conveyed through a Letter of Intent presented to German renewable energy company ENERTRAG, underscores Germany’s commitment to advancing strategic foreign projects, with ENERTRAG serving as a key shareholder and joint venture partner in Hyphen Hydrogen Energy.
Minister Habeck emphasized Germany’s heightened support for the project, stating that by granting it strategic status, Germany will deploy enhanced foreign trade promotion instruments.
Situated within the Tsau-Khaeb National Park, the Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project is poised to revolutionize green energy production.
With plans to install 3 GW of electrolysis capacity fueled by 7 GW of renewable energy predominantly derived from wind and solar sources, the project is projected to yield an impressive two million tons of green ammonia and 350,000 tons of green hydrogen annually upon completion.
