GE Gas Power Partners with Iraq to Significantly Increase Power Generation Capacity

GE Gas Power has announced a major boost to Iraq’s power generation capacity through a partnership with the Ministry of Electricity.

In the first half of this year, the company successfully serviced and upgraded 1400 megawatts (MW) of gas turbine capacity across the country.

The aim of this strategic move is to enhance power generation capabilities and improve the efficiency and performance of the units, particularly in preparation for the peak summer demand.

The Khor Al-Zubair power plant saw comprehensive maintenance work, including major overhauls, carried out on two gas turbines with a combined capacity of 200 MW. Similarly, the Shatt Al-Basra power plant underwent inspection and replacement of key gas turbine components, resulting in the completion of a 100 MW gas turbine service.

Notably, at the Al Khairat Power Plant, the ministry’s teams carefully attended to six gas turbines, totaling 600 MW, with technical and engineering support from GE. Additionally, a 100 MW gas turbine upgrade was implemented at the same power plant.

At the Al Quds Power Plant, GE and the Ministry of Electricity successfully upgraded two gas turbines, increasing their total capacity to 200 MW. Furthermore, GE implemented an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) technology upgrade on 200 MW gas turbines at the Nineveh Power Plant.

This transformative upgrade significantly improved output, efficiency, and availability while reducing fuel consumption, thereby boosting the overall performance of the power plant.

GE has been actively involved in Iraq’s power sector since 2011, contributing over 19,000 megawatts of power to the national grid. In 2021, the company introduced a comprehensive energy transition plan for their 240 gas turbines installed across the country, including Northern Iraq.

This recent announcement reinforces GE’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s power generation needs and improving the efficiency and performance of its energy infrastructure.
