Integrated energy company Galp – alongside partners the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) and Custos Energy – has successfully drilled the Mopane-2X well in PEL 83, leading to another light oil discovery in Namibia’s Orange Basin.
The discovery comes as part of Galp’s ongoing exploration campaign that began last November and targets the Mopane complex covering Blocks 2813A and 2814B.
Last January, the company announced a light oil discovery – Mopane-1X – which indicated preliminary signs of hydrocarbon presence.
“The continuing success of the exploration campaign further demonstrates the scope and potential of PEL 83,” said Knowledge Katti, Chairman and CEO of Custos Energy.
The Hercules rig will return to the Mopane-1X well location for a drill stem test until early-April. Galp will analyze the acquired data in the coming weeks to evaluate the commercial viability of both discoveries.
“With this discovery, we are one step closer to harnessing the full potential of this campaign,” commented Maggy Shino, Petroleum Commissioner of Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy. “We are proud to have achieved this milestone.”
Galp operates Blocks 2813A and 2814B with an 80% working interest, alongside its partners NAMCOR and Custos Energy, which each carry a 10% working interest.
