Italian oil company Eni announced on Friday that it has produced five million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the ultra-deep waters of Area 4 in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin.
This milestone is a significant achievement for the project, highlighting the technical and operational success, as well as the dedication, commitment, and collaboration of the entire team and its partners. \
Area 4 includes major industry players such as ExxonMobil, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), GALP, KOGAS, and Mozambique’s national oil company, ENH.
LNG production in Area 4 is being conducted by the Coral Sul FLNG platform, which began operations in October 2022.
Since then, the platform has exported 70 LNG cargoes and 10 condensate cargoes, contributing significantly to Mozambique’s economic growth.
Eni emphasizes that the Coral Sul project is a landmark for the industry, establishing Mozambique as a key player in the global LNG market and paving the way for transformative change in the country.
The Coral Sul FLNG platform has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per year (MTPA) and will tap into the vast Coral reservoir, which contains an estimated 450 billion cubic meters of gas located offshore in the Rovuma Basin.
Eni, the concessionaire for Area 4, has also announced plans to develop a second floating platform, Coral Norte, identical to Coral Sul, to further enhance gas extraction in the region.
