Eni Accelerates Phase 2 of Congo LNG Project Ahead of Schedule

Eni Advances Congo LNG Phase 2 with Early Gas Flow and Nguya FLNG Arrival, First Export Set for 2026

Eni has commenced Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project ahead of schedule, following the arrival of the Nguya FLNG unit and the entry of gas into the new offshore infrastructure. The company aims to export the first LNG cargo in early 2026.

Phase 2 introduces three additional production platforms, the Scarabeo 5 unit for gas treatment and compression, and the Nguya FLNG for liquefaction and export. These additions increase the project’s total capacity to 3 million tonnes per year, equivalent to approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas.

This fully integrated system enables Eni to maximize gas production from the Nené and Litchendjili offshore fields in the Marine XII block while managing volumes flexibly. It ensures a consistent supply to both the Tango FLNG, operational since late 2023, and the Nguya FLNG.

Remarkably, Phase 2 reached operational status just 35 months after the construction of the Nguya FLNG began, setting a new standard for rapid and efficient project execution in the LNG sector.

The milestone reflects strong industrial planning, technological innovation, and close collaboration with local stakeholders.

Much of the project work was carried out in Congo, enhancing local workforce skills and contributing to the growth of the national industrial sector.

The Nguya FLNG, measuring 376 meters by 60 meters, incorporates advanced technologies to reduce its carbon footprint and process gas with variable compositions, supporting future field development.

The Scarabeo 5, converted from a drilling rig, now handles gas treatment, separation, and compression with decarbonization-focused solutions, demonstrating how existing industrial assets can be repurposed effectively.

Eni has operated in the Republic of the Congo for over 55 years, actively advancing the country’s gas resources.

The company supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo, which generates 70 percent of national electricity, and supports upgrades to the transmission network, including the high-voltage line from Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville.

Beyond energy production, Eni is committed to energy transition initiatives, such as the agri-feedstock biofuels project, and broader community development efforts, improving access to energy, water, healthcare, and economic opportunities for local communities.
