Empowering Women in Mining Shaping the Future at Mining Indaba 2024

The ever-changing landscape of the mining industry, marked by bold transformations and rapid shifts, has prompted Raksha Naidoo, CEO of The Particle Group and Chairperson of Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA), to share valuable insights on positive disruption and the emerging trends shaping the future of African mining in a recent interview with Penelope Masilela.

With the focus on the Mining Indaba 2024 theme, “Embracing the Power of Positive Disruption for a Bold New Future for African Mining,” Naidoo’s perspective sheds light on the industry’s evolving nature, emphasizing inclusivity, sustainability, and the significant contributions of women in leadership roles.

Positive disruption: A woman’s leadership perspective

For WiMSA’s chairperson, positive disruption aligns with the transformative power of women and women’s leadership in the mining industry. Naidoo emphasizes the industry’s need to embrace the distinct voice, thoughts, ideas, and leadership style that women bring to the table.

She believes that the differences in approach between men and women in leadership roles can lead to positive changes, asserting that having women in key positions is crucial for a more inclusive and innovative mining sector.

“As we move forward, the most positive change we can bring about in the industry is having women in crucial roles for the right reasons,” she said. “The unique outlook and empathetic leadership that women often bring are the missing pieces necessary to propel the mining industry into a new era.”

Future trends in mining: A focus on sustainability

Looking ahead to future trends shaping the mining industry, Naidoo highlights the global shift towards sustainability and the green revolution. With an increased emphasis on sustainable practices, responsible mining, and environmental considerations, she sees the industry evolving towards more environmentally friendly methods.

Naidoo points to growing awareness, responsibility, and accountability among mining houses to create a more sustainable future. She recognizes the importance of staying ahead of the curve and future-proofing mining operations.

“The industry’s focus on ‘green metals’ and battery minerals aligns with the broader push for cleaner, more sustainable practices. Automation and environmentally friendly mining methods are anticipated to play a crucial role in the future, reflecting the industry’s commitment to lessen its ecological footprint,” said Naidoo.

Challenges and opportunities in the energy transition

Addressing the transition to renewable energy, Naidoo insists on the need for an open-minded approach. While acknowledging the challenges associated with this shift, including cost factors and regional disparities, she stresses the importance of embracing new ideas, especially from the younger generation.

“There are opportunities in the energy transition, with the potential for the younger generation to bring innovative ideas and perspectives. Adopting a new outlook on environmental science and staying informed of industry trends will play a crucial role in navigating the challenges associated with this transition.”

As the mining industry continues to shape a new bold future, embracing diversity, sustainability, and innovation remains key to its success.
