Egypt’s Elsewedy Electric, in collaboration with The Arab Contractors, has successfully added three additional hydro turbine generators to Tanzania’s national power grid.
This expansion boosts the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project’s (JNHPP) total power output to 705 megawatts.
The milestone was announced by Tanzanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Doto Biteko on July 16 during a site visit to JNHPP.
This advancement represents a significant stride toward meeting the country’s electricity needs and stabilizing the national grid.
“The successful integration of these units has notably increased Tanzania’s electricity supply to 705 MW from the JNHPP, out of a projected 2,115 MW,” Biteko stated.
“This development reinforces our electricity generation capacity and allows us to focus on stabilizing the transmission infrastructure.”
The added power generation is expected to create a surplus on the Tanzanian grid, which will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve energy security.
Wael Hamdy, Senior Vice President and CEO of E&C at Elsewedy Electric, expressed pride in the company’s role in enhancing Tanzania’s energy sector.
“We are delivering on our commitments. Despite numerous challenges, we began supplying robust power to the Tanzanian grid on February 17, 2024.
We have since met TANESCO’s energy requirements, replacing diesel power with reliable green energy. This accomplishment ends load shedding in Tanzania and advances TANESCO’s goals of carbon neutrality,” Hamdy said.
This achievement underscores the successful partnership between Elsewedy Electric and The Arab Contractors in advancing Tanzania’s transition to sustainable energy and strengthening its electricity infrastructure.
