Egypt to Add 3 GW of Solar and Wind Power by 2025 Through Private Investments

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Energy plans to integrate 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power into the national grid by the summer of 2025, according to a government official who spoke to Asharq Business.

The projects will be executed by private sector companies under a Build, Own, Operate (B.O.O.) model, meaning the investors will finance, construct, operate, and own the projects, while the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) will purchase all the electricity produced over the plants’ lifespan.

The operational lifespan of the plants is approximately 20 years for solar and 25 years for wind energy.

Key projects include a 500-megawatt (MW) solar plant by Norway’s Scatec and a 1,000-MW solar project by UAE-based AMEA Power, developed in two 500-MW phases.

Additionally, a 650-MW wind farm will be built by a consortium of Orascom Construction, Japan’s Toyota Tsusho, and France’s Engie. Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power will contribute another 200-MW wind farm.

An additional 600 MW of solar projects will also be implemented, though the specific companies involved have not been disclosed.

The total investment for these renewable energy initiatives is expected to exceed $2.5 billion, with most projects located in Ras Ghareb, near Hurghada, and in Aswan.
