Egypt Inaugurates Largest Solar Power Plant to Advance Clean Energy Goals

Egypt has completed the construction of the 500-megawatt Kom Ombo solar power plant, now the country’s largest solar photovoltaic facility.

Developed by China Energy Construction, the plant is located in the Aswan Governorate and represents a major step toward achieving Egypt’s Vision 2030 for clean and sustainable energy.

The Kom Ombo plant features a direct current installed capacity of 560 megawatts, incorporating over one million solar panels and a 220-kilovolt booster station to enhance transmission efficiency.

Once fully operational, it is expected to provide clean electricity to approximately 256,000 households each year, while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 760,000 tons annually.

Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao hailed the project as a prime example of green cooperation between Egypt and China.

He emphasized that the plant represents more than just an energy infrastructure project—it serves as a model for future collaboration in sustainable development.

He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s energy transition through ongoing investment in renewable technologies such as solar, wind, hydrogen, and energy storage.

The Kom Ombo solar plant marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s strategy to diversify its energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and establish a more resilient and environmentally responsible power sector.
