DRC Prime Minister and Angolan President Forge Strategic Partnership to Boost Stability and Trade in Central Africa

The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Judith Suminwa Tuluka, held high-level talks with Angolan President João Lourenço, who also serves as the African Union Chairperson.

The discussions centered on enhancing security in the Great Lakes region and deepening economic cooperation, signaling a shared commitment to establishing their bilateral relationship as a pillar of stability in Central Africa.

During a bilateral meeting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in Yokohama, both leaders emphasized the importance of addressing persistent security challenges in eastern DRC.

They underscored the need for coordinated action to support ongoing peace processes, referencing diplomatic initiatives led by Washington and Doha.

Prime Minister Suminwa highlighted the significance of a joint DRC-Angola approach to reinforce regional stability.

President Lourenço’s dual role as Angolan Head of State and current African Union Chair adds strategic weight to their commitment, particularly in coordinating peace efforts across the continent.

As part of concrete developments, President Lourenço officially invited the DRC to the inauguration of the Kabinda refinery, a major project symbolizing industrial growth in the region.

Additionally, he announced an official visit to Kinshasa in October, coinciding with the handover of the presidency of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

This high-level meeting in Japan, held within the framework of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), underscores the growing diplomatic rapprochement between Luanda and Kinshasa and reflects a shared vision for stability and economic progress in Central Africa.
