Dangote Refinery to Double Capacity to 1.4 Million BPD Through Strategic Global Partnerships
Nigeria’s Dangote Group is fast-tracking its ambition to build the world’s largest single-location refinery, leveraging strategic international partnerships to expand production and strengthen its regional energy footprint.
During a press briefing in Mumbai, Aliko Dangote confirmed the signing of a new contract with Engineers India Ltd (EIL) to double the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) within three years.
This follows a separate deal with U.S.-based Honeywell, which will provide advanced technology and process solutions for the upgraded refinery units.
EIL, a leading engineering consultancy under India’s Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, previously served as Project Management and EPCM Consultant for the refinery’s first 650,000 bpd train, a milestone that has already reshaped Africa’s energy landscape.
The refinery, commissioned in 2024, currently produces Euro-V standard gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene, influencing fuel markets across West Africa.
The new memorandum of understanding designates EIL to manage the refinery’s second train, including a propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit that will increase polypropylene production from 830,000 tonnes per annum to 2.4 million TPA.
This expansion positions Nigeria as a regional hub for refined products and petrochemicals, further strengthened by Honeywell’s involvement.
Honeywell will supply critical automation, digital optimization, and advanced refining technologies to ensure operational efficiency, reliability, and innovation for the refinery’s expansion and future product lines.
Aliko Dangote expressed confidence in EIL’s capabilities, stating, “Dangote reaffirms its confidence in Engineers India Limited. The signing of this MoU for the Second Train is a clear testimony to EIL’s sustained brilliance.”
EIL Chairperson and Managing Director Vartika Shukla described the expansion as “a project of global significance that will stand among the largest refinery complexes at a single location.”
With both EIL and Honeywell partnerships secured, the Dangote Refinery is set to become the world’s largest single-location refinery, transforming Nigeria’s energy sector and positioning Africa at the forefront of the global downstream economy.
