DanAon Energy (Pty) Ltd., a Namibian-owned solar energy company, is advancing plans to build a 40 MW photovoltaic (PV) solar plant in Gibeon, located in Namibia’s Hardap Region.
The project is pending approval from the Electricity Control Board of Namibia and an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC).
The proposed solar park will span 40 hectares and is expected to significantly reduce Namibia’s dependence on traditional energy sources while boosting renewable energy production.
The project will feature approximately 70,000 solar panels, which will generate 40 MW of clean energy to be injected directly into the national grid. This will support Namibia’s ambitious goal of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030.
DanAon Energy plans to develop and operate two solar plants on the Gibeon site, converting the undeveloped land into a major solar power hub.
The project will also include essential infrastructure such as PV modules, administration buildings, storage facilities, and a transmission line connecting the plant to NamPower, the national electricity provider.
The development process will unfold in several phases, including land acquisition, geotechnical assessments, and obtaining necessary permits.
Initial site preparation will involve clearing the area, constructing foundations, and using heavy machinery to ensure the site is ready for the installation of solar panels and related equipment.
Namibia’s annual electricity consumption exceeds 3,000 GWh, while its current generation capacity is around 1,305 GWh, leaving the country reliant on energy imports from South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique to fill the gap.
With this solar project, DanAon Energy aims to contribute to Namibia’s renewable energy targets, enhancing local energy security and sustainability.
