Coral Sul LNG Platform to Contribute $16 Billion to Mozambique Over 30-Year Lifespan

Over its projected 30-year operational lifespan, the Coral Sul floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform is expected to contribute approximately 16 billion US dollars to the Mozambican state through taxes and fees.

This estimate was revealed on Tuesday during a media visit to the Coral Sul platform, organized by Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Operated by Italian energy company ENI, the platform is managed locally by ENI Rovuma Basin. During the visit, ENI Rovuma Basin General Director Marica Calabrese presented details about the platform’s operational performance, sustainability initiatives, and its economic impact on the country.

Located about 50 kilometers off the coast of Palma district in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, the platform lies roughly 200 kilometers north of the provincial capital, Pemba. It was officially inaugurated on November 23, 2022, by then-President Filipe Nyusi.

Constructed by Samsung at a shipyard in South Korea, the platform was transported to the Mozambique Channel, where it now operates in the ultra-deep waters of the Rovuma Basin.

It extracts natural gas, which is then processed and liquefied onboard. Coral Sul has an annual production capacity of 3.4 million tonnes of LNG.

As of June 2025, the platform had processed 501.6 million cubic feet of natural gas and exported 128 shipments—112 of LNG and 16 of condensate. It had also contributed $210 million in taxes to the Mozambican government.

British oil giant BP has an exclusive 20-year contract to purchase all LNG produced by Coral Sul, with an option to extend the agreement by another ten years.

Among several LNG initiatives in Cabo Delgado, Coral Sul is currently the only project in active production.

Its offshore location has shielded it from attacks by Islamist insurgents, whose activities have severely disrupted onshore LNG developments, particularly in the Afungi Peninsula.
